Sally

Now, I think you all know me by now and you know I don’t often use people’s actual names. I don’t mention companies; I deal with good or bad or otherwise.

Unless, I mention Apple products, because I use them and only have my laptop, iPad and iphone because about five years ago I had one-off funding that helped pay for those things and maybe one day before I have to do a Go-Fund-Me page they might sponsor me for these things. Hint! Hint!

So, Sally the overlocker, it’s not actually about either of those things, but once upon a time back in the 90’s when a few people would gather at 5am in my lounge for raisin toast and cups of tea after the clubs, at my home in South Yarra.

A few of the guys were discussing some ‘guy’ topic. The other two ladies that were there and myself got a wisp of their blokie conversation.

To not be left out, we created a fictitious lady-friendly topic and we name dropped, you guessed it. Sally the Overlocker.

Clearly, a fictitious personality we dropped her into conversations at random intervals, even to the point where one of the two guys looked over rather curiously.

FYI, South Yarra is a rather exclusive suburb to live in and I was ‘crawling’ distance to the Jam Factory on Chapel Street and the house I was in, while not at all amazing, was the cheapest rent I’ve ever had in Melbourne. $262.15 per calendar month in 1993. Those were the days.

NDIS

NDIS

One of these days Alice! One of these days! One of my work colleagues (still a friend) from fifteen years ago, used to say that to me all the time when I was giving him a bit of SASS.

one of these days alice

What can I say? I refer to him as my Gay Silver Fox.

Anyway, I digress.

One of theses days I want to be able to tell someone how amazing it is to have the NDIS. If your new to my blog, National Disability Insurance Scheme.

how great is the ndis

I don’t want to utter the words. It’s an absolute shitstorm of red tape and the goal posts moving and it’s a friggin’ nightmare.

Why is it so hard?

Should point out the NDIS is the ONLY FUNDING I’ve had.

Wait, I had some one-off funding of $9,000 about five years ago, which is how I bought my laptop, iPad and iPhone and a number of other things.

When you first get given that kind of funding and a time limit of six months to spend it. (it must be spent on disability related such and such) You struggle to imagine how you will use it all.

But, nailed it, I did.

But, seriously the NDIS!!!

Technology – Part 2

Technology –  Part 2

The NDIA has passed down the decision, they will not fund computers.

Not funding computers

I think this is probably, due to the carte blanche attitude of ‘anybody with an ISP’ (Individual Support Package) and the inability to police/monitor recipients of funding packages to buy a new computer, iPad, X-Box, gadgets, whatever, every year regardless of, if they need them.

Apple prods

Obviously, they don’t hut they have not ever managed this as a funding oversight or overspending.

I don’t know how I’m going to afford a new computer just because the government thinks

“EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN AUSTRALIA HAS A COMPUTER”

I have carers who don’t own a computer or even have one in their homes. My father never had a computer and he’s 68 years old, by the way and would not cope nor even be interested in a computer.

No computer

So, ergo, case in point, I don’t know how the government want us to manage our NDIS funding or anything else we are supposed to do on a computer, if we can’t afford one. I guess (to quote a friend) they think I’ll be able to smash away on my pillow as if it’s a keyboard.

Great image BTW (By the way)

Technology

It might surprise you all to learn, I’m not as tech savvy as you all believe. Despite only being one handed, I will use my laptop, my iPad and my iPhone all at the same time.

Not tech savvy

My laptop is hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable, allowing me to use my computer on a bigger screen. I use my iPad for email, then my iPhone for texting or messaging. All simultaneously.

Laptop to TV

Try it, it’s a challenge, not for the faint hearted. But it’s often how I stay on top of “Admin, work social connections and TV.

Social connections

At the moment, my laptop has a virus (cough, cough) and things have been getting glitchy (as I call it). I’ve go big black bars appearing down either side of the screen and font that is tiny.

And yes, I’ve looked at the basic things to fix it. I’ve mentioned my virus (cough cough) to a few people hoping I might encounter somebody kind enough to help fix it.

Often the response is; But don’t you have an Apple? (I thought they didn’t get viruses?)

To which all I can do is growl.

“Shuddup! Have you met me? My name is Helen!”

Computer virus 1

I guess this is a good time to mention, I only have these toys because of some one-off funding I received about four years ago and not a moment too soon. My laptop prior to this was ten years old and I’d been begging for help for years.

Today’s Lunch – 13th June 2018

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Well, time to confess. I start this post Tuesday night before going to bed so I can get a head start on everything that happens Wednesday. I do much prep work every day so the following day or days runs to plan.

Early start

Remember that migraine I had a week ago? Yes? Still got it! My GP would normally give me a jab in the ass of Tremadol. I always joke I’ll have it in the left glute please since I don’t feel it as much. Tremadol is high up in the food-chain of opiates. An injection normally knocks me out within half an hour so I have to hurry up and get home to bed. Tuesday after a big day in the city I got home just before 5pm. I took a Tremadol tablet (slower acting) and went to bed. Got up at 7.30pm, having not slept and still with the migraine.

There is no God!

It’s much earlier than I normally tap this out on my iPad and I might be lucky if I make it to midnight and I have trouble getting to bed or sleep before 1am. Don’t see the point anyway, since the street cleaners come around from then on. I failed to mention last week I found that pine-orange mushrooms have finally come into season. As a family when I was a kid, we would go to the pine-Forrest’s an hour away from home to pick them around the Easter weekend when the season started.

Bed with migraine

So, to be fair tonight’s dinner will be a very simple fry-up of potato chips a capsicum and just a few of these mushrooms cut up like fat chips. So simple, so tasty and again, like the prickly pear I can’t describe what the pine orange mushrooms taste like. I can tell you they do give you slightly weird dreams but considering the antidepressants I’m on already gives me those, that doesn’t mean much.

Dinner tonight

People often comment that I seem to be ok(?) about my disability. I prompt to explain how they mean this? And they suggest I don’t seem depressed, I tell them I’m self-medicated. Then there’s the assumption I’m mean, I smoke pot. I have never so I explain I’m on just the right amount of antidepressants. I’m on a small dose enough to keep me emotionally even without disturbing my sleep too much. Because they can.

Antidepressants 1

Did not get to have lunch today, despite going to bed by 11pm! (it was a miracle) I slept on and off all night. I still felt seedy so had a kip before coming out instead of lunch. Here is a photo instead of the pine orange mushrooms that will be part of tonight’s dinner.

Your welcome!
Cheers,

Live post 1

Here is the News

About 2 months ago, I suggested to the lovely Noelle my administrator and biggest support. Without her http://www.Hellonwheels/lifeonehanded.wordpress.com would still be on paper and not live.

I have previously mentioned but just to remind you all. I write long hand on paper when the inspiration takes me.

Here is the news 1

Generally when I need to rant a little, or express my great frustration or want to share…..you get the idea if you have followed my blog long enough. I photocopy my writing and post to Noelle who is interstate and she types them up and we chat by email and social media. As this process, often means the posts that go ‘live’ there is a significant lag. Lately I’ve not written for several weeks, not been rather inspired to share, too busy living, dealing, treading water and keeping my head above water.

Jamima

So, the plan to do a live blog at least once a week, the first few weeks just didn’t happen. And thankfully, Noelle didn’t push it. I was busy enjoying Jamima’s last few weeks.

I’ve also been house-hunting much to my dismay (there are no words to accurately describe how much I hate this) and dealing with the inadequacies of the NDIS. (Don’t get me started!)

House hunting

Jamima has now been gone three weeks and obviously, that fateful week where I finally let her go, was just awful. It’s sad even now.

And now, I’m back at the plan of one live post a week of what is going on now…. and obviously, live, meaning I’m tapping away on my iPad and Noelle will edit my dyslexic efforts. I’ll give the final ‘Go ahead!’ And Noelle finds the memes and posts it live.

iPad

So, this week, this is the first post and no matter how my weekend goes. No matter how behind I am on my chores (emails, comics, admin, rest) I’ll tap out some words so I stay with my commitment to keep you up to date of what shit I’m dealing with now.

Single Task

Single Task

Being one handed means everything takes longer. I’m always multi-tasking, which means while I’m waiting for the omelette to cook, I’m unpacking my dishwasher and repacking it.

single-task-1

I’ll be watching something on my TV from my laptop which is hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable. (for better viewing) and on my iPad, I’m checking my emails. And texting people so I can keep in touch. This is how I manage to keep on top of all my ‘chores’ because it’s all the stuff that helps me maintain my independence.

sitting-on-lounge

But often at midnight, I need all the “busy” to stop so I can start to wind down. I have a term for it. I like to call it ‘Single task!’ And it’s not as easy as it sounds. I like to put on a TV show that I can put everything else down and not allow things to distract me.

single-task-2

No phone, no emails, no magazines, no word puzzles, nothing! Just a TV show.

Because I can no longer read novels, I don’t have that wind down time in bed where you read a few chapters that helps you get sleepy. Within a few days, you go to bed earlier and earlier so you can read longer, I have TV.

single-task-3

Right now, I’m writing while eating lunch at my favourite Café. Wednesday’s, I try to get out early enough to have lunch at my Café, because if I wait until I’m home, I get lunch around 5pm. From here I go to my chiropractor, then back to my neighbourhood where I get acupuncture. I call it my “Punchy/stabby” day…

ADHD

I think I have a problem. I cannot single-task! It’s impossible. No matter how I try, I end up pausing something I’m watching on TV to go to my laptop and do a Google search. All while I write “pen to paper” for my blog, check emails on my iPad and text!

And it’s now 8pm and I’m yet to make dinner.

Guess the muffin’s I planned to make can wait.

Next!

Oh! Wait! Forgot the most important thing I was doing. It was Jamima’s bed! And she went from sleeping beauty to attack cat! And I have the scars to prove it.
