TV Girl

TV Girl

As I have mentioned previously, I’m very much a TV girl. Sometimes I think my generation was raised by the TV. Now that I can’t read, TV is how I get more of my entertainment and I switch off my busy brain and I fill my down time. So, I have a lot of capacity for TV shows.

I have different shows for different moods, times of day or night or whatever. If you are a TV person like me, you will know what I mean when someone with less time on their hands, some years ago asked me if he should watch ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘Walking Dead’. Can you feel my death stare?

Game of Thrones

Walking Dead

Because the correct answer is “BOTH” you watch BOTH and you watch  ‘Talking dead’ after ‘The Walking Dead’ with Chris Hardwick, so you can get lots of other bits behind the scenes of Walking Dead and if you want to binge it, watching Talking Dead slows it down.

While those shows only last part of the year (Game of Thrones finished this year 2019) you fill the rest of the year with other things.

People often tell me what they are watching, while I share with them what I am watching. There are times, because I watch so much I’m always behind, people share what they are watching, if it sounds really good, I collect it, I keep a file on my laptop ready to watch. A shortlist on a post it notes, so I prioritise things to watch and I generally don’t start anything until I have it all.

Years ago, I watched a season of Sons of Anarchy (SOA) an episode every week and one episode had me so emotionally raw, I had a tradie arrive just after I finished an episode, where I was so emotionally brittle, I think the guy thought I’d burst into tears. No really.

NDIS

NDIS

One of these days Alice! One of these days! One of my work colleagues (still a friend) from fifteen years ago, used to say that to me all the time when I was giving him a bit of SASS.

one of these days alice

What can I say? I refer to him as my Gay Silver Fox.

grey silver fox

Anyway, I digress.

One of theses days I want to be able to tell someone how amazing it is to have the NDIS. If your new to my blog, National Disability Insurance Scheme.

how great is the ndis

I don’t want to utter the words. It’s an absolute shitstorm of red tape and the goal posts moving and it’s a friggin’ nightmare.

Why is it so hard?

Should point out the NDIS is the ONLY FUNDING I’ve had.

Wait, I had some one-off funding of $9,000 about five years ago, which is how I bought my laptop, iPad and iPhone and a number of other things.

ipad

When you first get given that kind of funding and a time limit of six months to spend it. (it must be spent on disability related such and such) You struggle to imagine how you will use it all.

But, nailed it, I did.

nailed it

But, seriously the NDIS!!!

Torture – Part 1

Torture Part 1 a

Torture Part 1

There are some posts I put off writing, I’ve had this on simmer in the back of my mind for years and as usual, there are a million ways to address this one. It kinda follows one about the Neuro Angiogram, of which I’ve had two, of and I hated. And ironically, I’ve had two of these also and I hated both of these also.

Angiogram

Firstly, I should premise by saying 2011 was a rough year. Let me start by saying the issues started a few years earlier, but I didn’t piece everything together until sometime later.

2011 problem

By 2011, I had been living one handed for a few years, being fiercely independent and with the ability to keep doing some things one handed. With the encouragement of my physio and OT, I kept doing “things” one handed, ie) lifting a 10kg bag of kitty litter and taking it from the front door to the back door, so it took pressure off the boyfriend. (Yeah! I know, I had one.) Helen now don’t got one. I’ll get to that, it’s on the list.

Kitty Litter

Now, where was I?

On the 6th January that year, I lifted my small suitcase from the floor to my bed. It was full of my laptop, hard drives and other tech stuff and I didn’t want my mother to lift it, so I did it. In hindsight, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Suitcase

Weird things started to happen like, it hurt to sit, but not my “butt” I had shooting pain down my right leg. Reminder; my right leg is my good leg, really don’t need anything going wrong with my good leg. I couldn’t sit on the couch in the evenings and watch TV.

Pain in the butt

Trips to my GP, had new medication added to my diet. I think we started with muscle relaxants.

DID NOT HELP!

Can’t recall now, what medications followed that, but I started getting Ultrasounds to my legs and other things.

What felt like forever, later we found what worked. The Silver bullet came in the form of Oxy and what I refer to as ‘Oxy, Oxy and Oxy.’

Oxy Oxy Oxy

Slow release, short release and don’t bother me with that because it’s just not going to help.

Oh yeah, eventually the diagnosis was a disc bulge and another crappy side-effect. I felt I needed to pee. All the time and of course if you have ever been on any serious Opiates, you know you have the added trauma of Constipation. Super!

Constipation

So, as part of the process to get better, is medication. Some people can walk it off and it just gets better. Some people require surgery, but while brain surgeons (Nuero Surgeons) do brains and backs, they prioritise brain.

Brain surgery

Now my happy place that year was lying on my bed, my laptop now lived on my bed so, I just spent more time there. My happy place with Opiates, was 20mg of Oxy Contin during the day and 10mg at night. If I had to go out, I would take 5mg of Oxy norm, it works fairly quickly, but gives you only three hours of taking the edge off.

Lying in bed

I caught the taxi to my local appointments, because I struggled to even scooter to them.

My ‘shrink’ I saw over the phone, paying using online banking. I saw my GP while lying down on his bed, you know, that table thingy? So, saying all of this, it was a long year.

Shrink on phone

The ironic part was all the medical people I saw that year, couldn’t diagnose me, until an MRI told me what the cause to the pain was.

Dr Diagnosis

After diagnosis, a lovely Indian woman who dropped over, I told her I had a disc bulge and she asked “do you have pain down your leg?”

Seriously.

Technology

Technology

It might surprise you all to learn, I’m not as tech savvy as you all believe. Despite only being one handed, I will use my laptop, my iPad and my iPhone all at the same time.

Not tech savvy

My laptop is hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable, allowing me to use my computer on a bigger screen. I use my iPad for email, then my iPhone for texting or messaging. All simultaneously.

Laptop to TV

Try it, it’s a challenge, not for the faint hearted. But it’s often how I stay on top of “Admin, work social connections and TV.

Social connections

At the moment, my laptop has a virus (cough, cough) and things have been getting glitchy (as I call it). I’ve go big black bars appearing down either side of the screen and font that is tiny.

And yes, I’ve looked at the basic things to fix it. I’ve mentioned my virus (cough cough) to a few people hoping I might encounter somebody kind enough to help fix it.

Often the response is; But don’t you have an Apple? (I thought they didn’t get viruses?)

To which all I can do is growl.

“Shuddup! Have you met me? My name is Helen!”

Computer virus 1

I guess this is a good time to mention, I only have these toys because of some one-off funding I received about four years ago and not a moment too soon. My laptop prior to this was ten years old and I’d been begging for help for years.

Single Task

Single Task

Being one handed means everything takes longer. I’m always multi-tasking, which means while I’m waiting for the omelette to cook, I’m unpacking my dishwasher and repacking it.

single-task-1

I’ll be watching something on my TV from my laptop which is hooked up to the TV with a HDMI cable. (for better viewing) and on my iPad, I’m checking my emails. And texting people so I can keep in touch. This is how I manage to keep on top of all my ‘chores’ because it’s all the stuff that helps me maintain my independence.

sitting-on-lounge

But often at midnight, I need all the “busy” to stop so I can start to wind down. I have a term for it. I like to call it ‘Single task!’ And it’s not as easy as it sounds. I like to put on a TV show that I can put everything else down and not allow things to distract me.

single-task-2

No phone, no emails, no magazines, no word puzzles, nothing! Just a TV show.

Because I can no longer read novels, I don’t have that wind down time in bed where you read a few chapters that helps you get sleepy. Within a few days, you go to bed earlier and earlier so you can read longer, I have TV.

single-task-3

Right now, I’m writing while eating lunch at my favourite Café. Wednesday’s, I try to get out early enough to have lunch at my Café, because if I wait until I’m home, I get lunch around 5pm. From here I go to my chiropractor, then back to my neighbourhood where I get acupuncture. I call it my “Punchy/stabby” day…

ADHD

I think I have a problem. I cannot single-task! It’s impossible. No matter how I try, I end up pausing something I’m watching on TV to go to my laptop and do a Google search. All while I write “pen to paper” for my blog, check emails on my iPad and text!

And it’s now 8pm and I’m yet to make dinner.

dinner

Guess the muffin’s I planned to make can wait.

Next!

Oh! Wait! Forgot the most important thing I was doing. It was Jamima’s bed! And she went from sleeping beauty to attack cat! And I have the scars to prove it.
