Tuesday

Had a crazy Tuesday this week. Now it’s Friday and I’m sitting at my fave café for what has become my new normal day here to lunch and write. It’s the Covid normal.

In my early days of diagnosis, I felt the need to explain my life was less Brain Injury and more normal and my first specialist explained I was a high functioning ABI.

So, Tuesday was a bit more crazy than usual. This is probably a good example of me being high functioning. Keep in mind, Helen is not a morning person.

9:15am – Usual carer arrives for Personal Care. She does all her chores and I do mine.

I make breakfast and sit to eat. (Slam down my entrée of pills)

Turn my phone on. It starts, the bells and whistles, texts and calls and messages. I don’t know why I need to go off grid on the weekend.

I call and negotiate with my young John to get me to my first of two appointments. He can squeeze me in.

11.45am – I’m meeting my Neuro Physio. He sits on the floor trying to stretch out my left calf and front ligaments.

I have been diagnosed with a clunky ankle. It’s an official medical term. It’s causing and adding to my knee replacement one day. It’s already nice and crunchy! (My knee)

So, he’s doing him. I’m doing me. I’m checking texts, sending texts, then I’m required to stand favoring my left side and sit, twist my upper body towards my left to help my leg and foot do leg and foot.

To be clear, all this teases my brain. It’s not super fun, because my right-side brain is saying “you want to do what? Get firetrucked!” (Trying not to swear!).

And I’m dealing with one of my two agencies to fill a shift, the following day on the Wednesday.

It’s a 6-hour shift where I get escorted out, I do the things, we have lunch either out or at home and I set them chores while I scooter out to other appointments, they don’t need to take me to. It’s also when I fit other things in where I need muscles and things that I can do by myself or on P.T.

It’s a 6-hour shift. The texts from my agency go back and forth. Eventually, I’m offered 3 hours which I later describe as like putting a band aid on a bullet wound. It’s a great image, isn’t it?

I was responding that I could offer their shift to my other agency, as in the whole shift 6 hours. What pretty band aids on either side of that 3 hour. I need the whole 6 hours.

I mention via text, I’m in the middle of something and I need to be present in my appointments, but then I get a rather long shitty text stating they had spent 4 hours messaging other carers and clients to find me someone. It sounds like they think I’m ungrateful. The grumpy text ends with an apology for the text. I am now getting busy – this is eight days after I started.

Hopefully I can do it justice. But otherwise, could be, I didn’t get to read her whole message. I got the gist and immediately texted my other agency and if the person was not in the office, I rang them directly.

When I rang, I could even interpret the pause and inner office convo that happened in the background. A carer they have been wanting to send me for some time, they were just waiting on an NDIS checklist.

I confess it’s been two weeks since that fateful day. So, while this may not flow seamlessly from the previous post, I hope you can keep up?

So, I text the agency who is choosing to do their job the hard way, that in the middle of two appointments I need to be actively present at. I’ll get back to them.

It does already look like I’m covering the following days shift myself another way. I flick a text to my other agency. In case that staff member wasn’t in the office that day, I quickly call.

“What’s that?” I’m on the phone while my Occupational Therapist, (OT) who I’m just meeting for the first time is with me. “No, I told her she could absolutely go pee.” Respectfully, that makes us friends for life.

I call the agency and I can tell exactly the conversation that’s happening in their office.

“Oh, send X, Y, Z!”

“Is that Helen? Just fill that shift!”

There is no better motivation than me missing a specialist appointment because their afterhours staff member fucked up my Monday morning. My Botox appointment was rescheduled for two months further away. Botox keeps my left toes from curling (I know. What?). Yes! Botox in my leg.

Anyway, yes. The NDIA survey has been completed and X, Y, Z can cover my Wednesday shifts until my other agency can cover it again.

After my OT appointment, I head out and call my Heidelberg taxi driver. Young John is best at this time and so is Sean!

I hoof it to my far local pide dealer. Pide is not code for anything. It’s just where I get my vegie pide from. Another taxi driver has arranged that I can wait around the corner to make life easier.

On the drive home (10-15 mins) I text the first agency. I confess I was pretty grumpy earlier and wished to call my support coordinator to growl at the agency because I just didn’t have the bandwidth to give the polite diplomatic response.

Yet, I messaged something along the lines of, ‘I appreciate how hard it is to fill shifts when my regulars are away or don’t have a weekend. Then something that I genuinely did appreciate her efforts. Despite that, rather than ring me first to ask if she could wriggle things so she could cover three of the six hours of my shift. Would it be enough?

Sometimes it is but this particular day, I had placed other things in around and in between the appointments that required wheels and muscle.

I did all of this with a migraine.

So, that shift was moved for a month or so to another agency.

The following Tuesday I received a message asking if I expected them to cover my Wednesday. I had to remind them I’d moved it temporarily. This is what happens when someone tries to cover a bullet wound with a band aid.

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Another week!

Actually, had Tuesday at home this week. Multitasking one-handed like a pro. Very good thing I have both a mobile and a landline as I used both at the same time to catch up on serious admin/organizing & negotiating. Also managed to write some posts ahead of printing and posting to my blog administrator next week.

Cleared up the trays that cover my coffee table and my couch. A calm mid-week lunch in my punchy-stabby day.

Today’s offering is a Bolognaise Arancini with side salad and my medicine.

And this, I don’t know what it’s called, but how could I not? And yes, I’m sharing it!

Cheers,

Hot off the Press

Monday, rudely awoken at the crack of nothing! At 3.45am. There is no God! Who rings anybody’s doorbell at that hour? I imagine it wasn’t even mine but likely unit 2………did I mention they told me they are moving? They were given notice to vacate using the excuse that family was moving in. I doubt it but, it’s the excuse landlords can use to get rid of tenants. When they told me, my neighbours suggested others would move in I would hate instead. Rude! I don’t hate them I just intensely disagree with their use of the doorbell rather than a key to open their own door and their definition of the term ‘Hippy!) Anyway, saw my Shrink, so good start to the week despite feeling knackered!

Doorbell

Glad I took photos of the concrete bollards in the Bourke Street Mall as the LEGO has been discarded. Ah, I’m sure it will be replaced. Give us time.

Ran into a retired Nun getting off the tram and decided to attempt to convince her to vote Yes, on the upcoming Same sex marriage equality postal vote. She actually doesn’t mind if two men love each other or two women love each other, it was just the use of the word ‘marriage’. I attempted to give her other points to consider and even after telling her I was a “Bitter single straight barren spinster” (yes, I told her I wasn’t bitter) she gave a little laugh and I gave up. I just hope it gave her something to think about.

Tuesday! Ladies?  Because I don’t think I have many male followers………would you prefer a trip to the dentist or the gynaecologist? I confess I’ve never seen a gyno but get my regular Pap smear every two years as it is recommended and as I went to the dentist today I confess to say, I vote pap smear! I had my teeth cleaned today and I confess I squirmed the whole time, and wringing my hands. I absolutely hate it and I’ve had fillings without needles. I’ve had needles driven into my lower back near my spine with only a local anaesthetic.  But Pap smear! I confess I kept holding up my right pointer finger to indicate I was drowning! (They suggested my left hand) but I had to remind them my left arm didn’t work and I promised not to get in their way. So, I guess it took longer than normal for that reason. I agreed to an x-ray which I later regretted as now I have more appointments to mend 4 fillings!

Dentist

Standard Wednesday, with a drop-in visit with Bella. She is often hiding and today I worked out the perfect way to encourage her to emerge. I can’t believe it has taken me so long. The shop has many, many pet toys. (You know the ones that squeak?) I love those toys. I just go crazy with the squeaky toys and she comes running. Awww.

Squeaky toys

Thursday, having family generally ignore my needs and isolation from family or friends and continually under delivering on promises. Therefore, sabotaging my ability to have funding or use things I need. I had the severe case of the CBF’s!

I kept my head down for the day and was largely off-grid. The few people I did reach out to didn’t improve my outlook much. Afternoon nap and rather late lunch was just what Doctor Helen ordered. A late text to a friend Michael and I learnt it had been his birthday! So, I gave him a call. Phone calls with Michael can cover a Plethora of topics and go for hours. Tonight, was nearly an hour, a short one all things considered. Ate dinner after midnight! I’ll get back on track tomorrow. Michael reminded me I’m overdue a trip to the community centre I go to for my free Osteo/Mio appointments. It’s a great way to feel your own life is normal.

Happy birthday
Friday, a long weekend bought to us by the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne. I mentioned I’m not into sport? Yes, very un-Australian. It also makes fun for going out shopping. Plenty of woman with a ‘kill or be killed’ attitude and men who have the day off work and don’t know how to act in normal society. Mixed with school holidays and a handful of teenagers treating the shopping complex like a playground. Running around playing kiss-chase? Is that what that was about?

Kiss chase
All I can say, is my attitude to people who are likely to knock me over? I go down, you come down with me! (Can’t wait to see what Noelle comes up with for that comment!)
Challenge issued……… Challenge accepted

Threw together a double batch of my special muffins and my carer left with the first 4 out of the oven. Muffins for everyone over the weekend! Ate dinner late and still ploughing through emails around 1.30am. So much for off-grid Saturday. At least I got to have a quick visit with both Bella and Wilfred this week. Looking forward to not having a schedule for a few days.

Muffins

Saturday, grand final day in Melbourne. Best afternoon kip ever! Didn’t want to get up. Late dinner, later coffee then went to bed at 2am. Still awake at 4.30am. No judgement please, coffee keeping people awake is for amateurs……

Sunday morning. What!? It’s day lights savings? There is no God! It takes me all summer (and the rest of spring) to get used to it. As another week begins……I’ll leave you with some photos of my discoveries in my back yard. It’s a concrete jungle.

Lastly, read six comics this week. Note, failed to mention the pitiful number last week but more than made up for it this week. I’m currently reading Buffy season 9. But it did take a conscious effort to achieve that number.

This week I might attempt to get to bed before 1am, as I do like to have a realistic and achievable goal. I have started with the new service provider for my carers. My local council is no more so, here’s to a new week where every day I’ll face a brand-new carer, do my own in-house induction and within 20 minutes they will see me naked! Luckily, they get paid for that torture! I wish I had kept a tally over the years, there have been so many carers.

Showering
To another crazy week ahead!

Crazy week

Hot off the Press

And another week begins.
Monday morning and my friend Phillip was gone before 5am! Not envying him at all. My day started at 9am, while I walked to the tram and again racked up 1,000 steps to get to the tram I paid for it.
Who knows what you get when you over work muscles that have been dormant and unused for the weekend? Yes, that’s correct my thigh muscles were on fire! Itchy!

Monday

While I didn’t get out until about midday I got to Osteo and was tortured (my carpel tunnel) and I was given a lift home by 6pm making it feel like I’d been out all day!

Tuesday, cold and wet so as my carer arrived on time I committed to going to my one appointment. Caught a taxi and had a great massage with the milo/Remedial student from RMIT. She even suggested I might have a little something called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Like I need to have another thing on my list, but if it’s an answer to anything I’m adding it to my list to discuss with my GP. Did just over 2,000 steps today and was struggling to stay awake past 8.30pm. But never fear, crawled into bed at 1.30am Wednesday morning. Don’t tell Ms Jillian.

Tuesday

Wednesday, did not want to get up! (No idea why…….shaddup!) more cold and wet today but it wasn’t raining when I had to get out so smashed out 1,000 steps just to get to the tram. Encountered an old Greek lady on the tram. Was out-Nona’ed by the Greek Nona. FYI: if you are unsure, a Nona is an Italian grandmother however I don’t know what the name for a Greek grandmother is)
Standard Wednesday foodie post……Meh! Paid some bills.

Wednesday

Standard Punchy/shabby day and as predicted my Chiro did tell me I looked tired. Had a laugh about the Greek Nona. The woman had rearranged the colour of my jacket and had been touching my purse inside the side of my bag. (She was attempting to fold it over to have it be safer and less at risk of theft) ironic she didn’t have any appreciation of my body-space and that she was in it. My Chiro has Greek ancestry her parents having migrated from there back in the 40’s or 50’s. Same era as my father from Italy. Managed 3,000 steps today, but promise to make up for that excessiveness tomorrow when I don’t leave the house.

Greek YiaYia

The highlights of Thursday were the other lovely Fijian carer I’ve had a few times now in recent months. An afternoon kip that was ruined by the doorbell at 4.30pm that when I went to see who was there, there was no one! Managed to pull the rest of the day together and after a chat on messenger with my Texan friend got into the kitchen to smash out dinner. Roasted veggies, including beetroot and some frozen peas, with a Chicken Kiev.

Thursday

Friday morning another rude awakening at 3.33AM, by the doorbell. I had only gone to sleep at 2am making me one very grumpy girl. Who the bloody hell does that? I didn’t get up so I don’t know if it was my doorbell or Unit 2 (we share a roof cavity as my Wog landlords built cheap and not to legal safety requirements) so I often hear their doorbell.

Friday

Friday resumed after only a few more hours sleep around 9am and after my afternoon carer, I smashed out a few more hours in the kitchen. A chicken soup bottled, yummy dinner and a serious effort with the bench top dishwasher so my Saturday carer doesn’t go out on stress leave from the remaining dishes needing her attention and another late night on the couch catching up on admin and emails before another lazy off-grid Saturday!

Ah, received some interesting mail today. Really want to chant “Yes! Yes! Yes!” But if you are not in OZ you do not know of the political debate about how to best waste, oops, sorry. Spend tax payer’s money to decide if same-sex marriage should be made legal here?

Same sex Marriage
Now, I’m a single bitter barren spinster (ok, not bitter) and I’m voting Yes! I want my gay friends to be able to marry if they want. This postal vote won’t even be legal! Even I’m surprised how backward we are on this topic!

Perfectly lazy weekend. Even did a little mindfulness colouring.

Keep in mind I’ve only got half the eyesight in each eye so do not enlarge!

Previous weeks efforts…….

IMG_3245

Single girl date night passed again binging TV………..I’ll mention only note-worthy shows. Some help me pass the time. You will always be able to tell the difference. Three more comics this week.
Had a big flashback this week of accessible bandaids…. I know. Weird Segway, however I’ve badly injured a fingernail on my left hand and as I can’t feel it I don’t know how much damage I’ve done. So, I’ve been sporting a bandaid as protection. Even my carers are struggling to open the packaging.

Band aid 1
Remember those days of Johnson and Johnson bandaids with the little red string across the top and down the side? Now bandaids are childproof and adultproof! I just want to perform a little first aid………..
And spring has finally sprung in my front Yard! this is the view from my bedroom window.

IMG_3249

Lastly, Sunday night into the kitchen to smash out a pasta bake for someone newly out of hospital after her second disc bulge surgery. All while singlehandedly making my own dinner. A pretty decent pork and diet mince hamburger patty with lettuce, beetroot and mayo on a wholemeal bun.
Meanwhile there are people in Florida without power or a roof over their heads. Sending good thought to you all. Two world leaders playing a simple game of mine is bigger than yours and they need to stop. It’s not a game! Please stop!
To a peaceful week and less stress on the Homefront.
Cheers,
H

Great week

Hot off the Press 3107a

And another week has passed and I’m wondering what a Normal week should look like? Monday, saw my shrink. I do love the adventure of going to the city, doing a little hunter/gather and ticking a few mental things off my list.

Mondays

Ironically Tuesday crashed and burned, did not have a good day. The flattest, saddest day I’ve had for a while. Just couldn’t do Person, let alone adult or human-being.

Crash and burn

Sick of family not doing what they have committed to, some family not helping at all and other family forgetting I live alone without so much as a cat! They dump their attitude on me! Always makes me think of when some old lady(parent) cries that her beautiful son has died by their own hand and didn’t even have the decency to leave a note to say why? Seriously, going back to bed until I’ve had enough sleep so I can better deal with the day! (as the roadwork continues outside!)

Wednesday, comes together nicely despite no Young John to tease me and scoop me up and make my life easier. I actually scootered a bit on Monday, then got around by tram, train, lots of steps on my pedometer around the city before another tram ride home.

Wednesday

Thursday, roadworks a constant out on my street, I had a much nicer massage at home from my lovely Caroline. I made sure the rest of the day was very low key.

Thursday

Friday, a newish carer took me out shopping, no pet shops this week sadly. Tried to not stress out my new carer I’ve got for the next month of Fridays. She is young and some of her giggly humour reminds me of my younger sister. She has a little fresh wit I like from my carers.

Friday 1

Have been on the serious Provo-trail this last week or so attempting to save some money, or catch up on rent. A friend advised the best way to save money is to not buy food! What the? You heard!
So, I’ve contacted the two major not for profit welfare agencies. Yield? $60 of which I think the checkout chic may have kept $20 of it, as it did not come off my groceries and I still spent some of my rent. All the bills are paid and the healthy pills restocked. So, now to catch up on rent.

Friday night I was out for dinner with my Boo. Wait! I haven’t been hiding anything. My Boo (sweetheart name) is a I lovely gay friend, and I had been unable to convince our friend Damo to come out. We went to a Greek restaurant and while the entree was ok, the main was substituted for a more expensive option. Not going back there.

Greek menu

Really want to go visit George at Helenic Republic and not just because it has my name on it!
My Boo once worked for the likes of Gordon Ramsey but now works in the Disability sector. He politely informed them what we had ordered versus what they gave us. They looked at me as if my ‘Date’ was trying to show off and that I was dating the wrong guy. Nice, right? My gay friends are the straightest looking men you will ever meet and the benefits for me is I know they like spending time with me for my stela personality.

Have ticked off 5 plus comics this last week. I started a sixth but it got dark. Sunset is around 5.30 at the moment and it snuck up on me. Looking forward to the spring blossoms outside my bedroom window just around the corner. Don’t plan on moving until then. Not that I have seriously been looking.

Forwent the single girl date night this week as I was getting into a show I couldn’t stop watching. You probably realise I watch a great deal of TV, it’s my thing. It’s how I switch off my very busy brain. It’s what entertains me and often how I mark time passing. Sounds ridiculous but…… So, I’m always behind. The distraction this week I will describe as this; Netflix, Baz Lehrmann, the Bronx, Late 70’s Disco and the Black Music scene that later became Hip Hop. Think Beastie Boys but black and all the classic 70’s clothes, cars and graffiti. And then you have a show called the Get down. Only 11 episodes, the first 90 minutes long and the rest an hour each. I know some people won’t commit to watching a show unless it’s more than a season however I understand this show was so expensive to make they couldn’t do more than a season. Baz Luhrmann does a great job though you can never say he doesn’t. I think the soundtrack would be a must have. For something very different from Helen’s normal.

Get down

The weekend has ended with a rare but welcome visit from a friend who lives hours away, but when working in this part of Melbourne for a day will come and stay over at the Chateau de Helen. Have I mentioned I’m lucky I have a spare bedroom? Single bed but….better than nothing. Phillip, I’ve known for 20 years from when he and his wife owned a toy shop in my country town that I grew up in, at a time I lived back in that area for two years in the late 90’s.  His kids were just little kids then but now are all grown up. Phillip is often my tech-support and while I barely speak Apple he has a PC brain. There is lots of disrespect for Apple and lots of me telling his where to go. But between the two of us, we upgrade and de-bug my laptop! And he’s off to bed hours before me. So, here I am writing this post before I start my wind-down. Supper and a Cuppa T, I think and maybe I might make my curfew of 1am. Closer to 1 than 2 isn’t really getting 1am………but I’m trying.

Computer wiz

My left shoulder is hurting, I’ve obviously done something. I can’t feel a drag of the muscles over my shoulder and down the front of my neck. Think I’ll be asking my Chiro to tape it this week. She prompts how much/where? I will be suggesting she put layers down, pull it up and put it just everywhere, front and back of my left shoulder prompting a laugh from her. “Just put it everywhere!”

Shoulder

To another crazy adventurous week. Trying to get the digits up on the pedometer to make Young John proud.

And hoping I get that final follower to get me to 100, not that I get that much feedback in the form of Likes, I know I have my small number of serious followers who like and comment. To you few, luv your work!
Cheers,
H

Good week
