Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Another mid-week post, it’s not getting old. Good food, better medicine. My favourite cafe never gets old. What gets old is doing adult so much it’s squeezing time to eat and write into oblivion. Note, the less lunch my lunch resembles and more like afternoon tea.

Yesterday, was at the self-advocacy group I attend. Picked up some comedy tickets for next March! Yippy! Stay tuned for that!

Here is a photo of what’s referred to as the witches’ hat in the Arts Precinct in Melbourne.

Note the beautiful spring day in Melbourne.

Today’s offering is Carrot cake and medicine (One of my serves of vegetables every day!) and the pretty strawberry daiquiri my lovely assistant is having.

And blessed Young John, my taxi driver has returned from Greece, have so missed him.

New Year

New Year

New Year

I know you can’t tell because it’s probably July or August. Just a guess, in reality and certainly in my world it’s January 4th, yes.

The crazy life, that is Helen begun. Went to bed early last night, OK, technically 1am, so whatever.

Jamima, lord love her, pestered me all night. Her nose and whiskers on my face, walking all over me not sure where to settle, scratching at my covers, the licks and fang-like bites = Pest.

Sitting on face

Also equals not nearly enough sleep. Woke at 6am and pressed the Mepacs Alarm so someone, somewhere knew I’d made it through the night, barely but I did, still qualifies.

Wake up early

My carer Miss Tina arrived before 10am and I fell into the wall when I got up. Definitely not a good sign.

Washed my hair today, even though it’s not a normal day to do so. It’s going to be hot today. Wet hair will help me stay cooler. Had a light breakfast and by 12pm I went back to bed for a 25-minute power-nap. Jamima came to me straight away. I could practically hear her say. “Hey, what are you doing?”

Wash hair

I confess I growled for her to leave me alone. Slept like the dead, scrambled up, got shoes on, brushed teeth etc and got on my bike.

OK, got on Hell on Wheels and full speed ahead to my parking spot at my last appointment.

Hellonwheels

On the way, encountered a young man (child, whatever) trying to drag his dog off the High Street around the corner. The dog was trying to ‘do’ something. I slowed down enough to tell him “I hope you’re going to pick that up!” Because I could tell he had no intention of doing so.

Dog poop

He muttered something to do with my mouth. I didn’t hear but he’s lucky I was running late for my pick-up.

Had the ‘Go-Slow’ all the way. Where people are just dawdling along, taking their sweet-ass time, chatting on the phones, I had a text beeping and reminding me it was neglected, but I went knowing full well it was Young John. I was late.

I parked at the Acupuncturist, managing not to smash my head into the pole at the front. (Because I don’t see it!) Took my flag inside so it wouldn’t get stolen. Make joke to have fun with the flag in my absence. You heard me.

Need walking stick today, can’t text, too many distractions around. Walk to the designated location and see Young John is waiting for me.

Getting into taxi

Felt like a Princess as I just walked right up to the taxi, opened the door and got in. He was on the phone to one of his taxi driver buddies on speaker.

Feel like a princess

Young John spent the weekend in hospital as he had a nasty infection that required surgery and had started to go septic.

Lift to my favourite café, it’s closed until Mid-January. Damn it! But really, it’s the only time they close, find alternative.

Coffee and huge Rumball – lunch. Rumball sub-standard, sad.

Don’t people know how to make a rumball? They should not be the size of a golf ball, for starters, but onward.

Rum balls

It’s now 2pm, time to hustle to Chiropractors.

“I’m well adjusted!” Yeah, she chants…

Short walk, short tram ride. Some serious texting, another short walk. Get stabbed – eight times.

OK otherwise known as Acupuncture. Made a call (I was in a separate room today) to register my ongoing interest in a Community Housing waitlist. Took four of my own needles out as I needed to pee. Not the first time.

Acupunture

Scooter ride home past the scene of the earlier crime.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I want to be wrong. He did not clean up after his dog.

Stopped down the street to chat to Matt who is building the apartments. His son 21, who has Autism was also there and his carer.

Building site

Brief stop at landlords to chat to their grandkids, “What did Santa bring?” And home around 6pm. Bring in washing and water the back garden.

Now inside…

Today’s Lunch

Good Mental Health Day

Now, you all should be aware by now Melbourne is dealing with summer and while my happy place is 25 degrees, today it’s 37 degrees and I’m out in it!

Hot day

These are the days hellonwheels serves me best. Particularly because I had to stop at a post office to collect a parcel. And then when I parked outside acupuncture I had to ask the lovely Angela to take the parcel inside. (For security) I already take my flag in so it doesn’t get stolen. It’s happened once, it’s not happening again!

hellonwheels parking

So, then as I watched a tram go past I received a message from Young John, he couldn’t help me today! On that topic, was in the Young John taxi Monday when his wife rang. Young Betty told me they were not going to move back to Greece! (Thank God!) She calls him each day when she finishes work (she is a nurse) and they chat on speaker phone so I always get to give him some cheek and chat to Young Betty.

Taxi

So, back to lunch.

Today with limited time to scramble, I have a lovely pancetta quiche with side salad and my standard medicine. No pretty leaf on top today. Tobey must be at lunch. No! He’s on holidays! How dare he! (note, not a question)

QuicheLatte

And tomorrow is a brand-new day!

Good day

Today’s Lunch

Hot! Its hot today in Melbourne.
Luckily, I scored a seat in the back room in full blast range of the aircon. It only sucks a little when the back door gets opened and I’m overwhelmed by a blast of heat.

And something a little different today. Is Pizza! On a tummy fluffy base with buffalo mozzarella.
A bigger than normal side-salad and that little Sicilian cannoli is actually BREAKFAST! (No judgement please) had to get out when Young John could fit me in.

Pizza

SaladCannoli

Planning to pick up Young Johns beautiful panettone today as his wife Young Betty (of course) will be at Chiro later and can take it home so it doesn’t melt. Gabriella even thought to mention I might reconsider taking it today so it doesn’t melt, I buy one panettone here each year and I gift it to Young John and his wife. They are so important to me and the panettone so pretty.

Panattone

Ironically, I didn’t eat panettone as a kid. Mum recently informed me when we visited my Nona & Nonno, it always appeared dry and unloved so we always avoided it. Now, I buy about 4 cheap supermarket ones every year for my baking!
Sssshhhhhhhh!!!!!(secret!)

Guess I should point out the pizza’s here are like what I had in Italy way back in 1994! Really thick base, made in a huge tray. Simple toppings and very, very tasty.

Italian Pizza 1

And you only need a slice.

Here are some photos for you. Before I leave and brave the heat.

Hot off the Press

It’s going to be a crazy week. I can always tell.
Monday, went to the DAC (Disability Advisory Committee) where I spruik myself as a community member/blogger/Girl about town!

DAC

Got to see Young John on the way there and back. He’s still sick but he’s sounding somewhat better.
Ended the day, with an hour-long call from me Ma (not me-maw) going over some admin to make having new carers in my home easier.

Tuesday plans went sideways immediately when my lovely massage was cancelled. So, I moved my GP appointment and the pastry order I made at my fav cafe was cancelled also. I had been hoping to post an extra post this week, to showcase what you should buy when going to a real patisserie. Of yummy goodness. It shall have to wait.

Cancelled appt

Have noticed a few neighbourhood cats have been coming up the front steps and loitering on the front lawn. I haven’t ever been able to go near them (one is old and blind, I’m told by a neighbour) but I never encouraged them when I had Jamima. But today I lost a pen! I know, doesn’t sound significant and it’s not expensive however, having had a cat I was in a habit of always putting something on top of whatever pen I was using. It’s a habit I’ve made sure not to break so when I have my next cat I don’t need to retrain myself of non-cat household habits. So, I’m wondering if Jamima can be blamed for my pen going missing? A friend told me I couldn’t blame her, but can’t I? Maybe these other cats and my pen being stolen from my bed is Jamima visiting and sending the clear message it’s time for a new fur-baby?

Visits

Wednesday, if you read my Foodie good mental health day post? You know, I was such a zombie I needed 2 lattes’. Medicine that is. Robert the owner even stopped by to chat briefly. He is gearing up for Spring Carnival and Christmas.

Wednesday

Saw my Chiro who has been banned from using her elbows in my glutes!  It has been known to have her hand slapped away. Today was one of those days. She exclaimed she wanted to help my lower back I pending disc bulge 2.0 issue. I suggested she help it and not try to cure it. Laughter all round. God help me! (In a non-religious way)

Chiro

Dropped in on Sinny where I buy cards and such and as he is closing down soon so I picked up some leather gloves for next winter. While negotiating, I queried how much they were? ($45) And how much they were now? ($32) I stated “Deal!” Then humorously after explaining I can only wear one of them (my left hand gets very cold but I don’t want to try to get a glove on it! So, I told him I only needed the right one? How much for just one? ($32) but he would throw in the other one, I told him I just needed to find someone who needed the left glove? I really will miss him. I once had my mosaic bordered mirrors for sale in his shop and many a gift I have purchased there.

Gloves

Had a great visit with Bella, she left her fur all over the legs of my pants.. Not complaining. Got to acupuncture late but was given the VIP room. So, made some calls. Guilty, not what you should do with 8 acupuncture needles in you.

Thursday! Got to have my massage that I didn’t get Tuesday. Making me a very happy girl. I was so organised I managed to get up and have breakfast before Caroline or even my carer arrived.  Caroline was very impressed. Quiet day at home and caught up on calls. Afternoon kip and even managed to get dressed without help. Try putting a bra on one-handed! Not fun. Bra

But dressed I was when my normal Friday carer arrived and we headed to ‘scray’ (short for Footscray) to an exhibition opening.

Thursday
My friend Larissa, who does much for advocacy in ABI and disability is a very talented artist. She does Handstands and does post ups. (She featured at the Arts Centre recently as mentioned in a previous Hot……..) and she does amazing Lino prints. Which I love.
Here are some photos.

Don’t mind my hair, it’s at its worst by Thursday late and I do look like I’ve been dragged through s hedge backwards……certainly how it feels.
Here are some photos of some of the other pieces that caught my eye.

Friday morning learnt a valuable lesson!
Remember that statement I would attempt to get to bed earlier? Achievable outcome? 1am! Yeah, turns out my standard 2am bedtime is more accurately achievable and I have even been coping. But, as I was out last night at the exhibition opening I got home around 9, ate dinner then did my usual catch-up-on admin/TV/emails, etc. and didn’t get to bed until 2.30! Disaster………..woke up like a zombie today!

Friday

Will binge some BBT (Big Bang Theory) to avoid a kip before going shopping. It is now (roughly) the end of Friday, officially Saturday. The dishwasher is now on a third time. It is only a single draw bench top dishwasher. Made some yummy things with my carer, have bagged and tagged for the freezer, to go to Sydney next week.

The weekend! Super lazy. Great weather for getting washing done. No Chinese laundry amazing. Still no single girl date night movie. Have still been binging and catching up on TV. Currently, watching season 2 of the Australian show Glitch and the other is called the Wrong Girl. Both thanks to my Toppy. (Topfield)

Wrong girl

Saturday. Night and I finally succeeded getting to bed by my self-imposed bedtime 1am, I mean I was still awake at 3am but still Winning!

Back during my club days, had I ever left a club that early my friends would have asked if I was ok? I know, still gotta write about my club days, otherwise referred to as my 20’s and the 90’s for everyone else. I will get there.

Clubbing

Some more comics moved around my home, not as many as last week but nothing to sneeze at.
Might get back into house hunting this week, if only it were that easy. It is only really when I stumble across a property that fits my requirements. Space versus value. Wish me luck.

Cheers,
H

Today’s Lunch

Missing Young John as Spring has really settled in. Freezing cold rugged up on the couch under a doona with the heater on! Just freezing. But making him proud today by walking to the tram.

It started to rain lightly just short of the tram stop but I’m in full-winter mode today. Full Marino wool jacket & my heavy jacket with the hood where I can’t see a foot in front of me.

IMG_3223

Sitting waiting for lunch & have done 1,300 steps already. Still can’t feel my left foot but, here we are! Winning!
Do I need to tell you all what this is? Including today’s complimentary Chocolate Mignon.
(Oh, look her hair looks lovely today!)

Anyway, always feel a bit like a wanker when i take a photograph of my foot. At least I don’t have a food only Insta account right?
Enjoy.

Cheers,

Today’s Lunch – 19th July 2017

Todays lunchSo, lunch is early today. Sadly, Young John is off to the bank. To get a loan, so he and his wife Young Betty can go visit her parents who are not well.

I wish I could help him.

It is what I refer to in Melbourne today as Full-Winter! I am wearing my Marino wool jacket and my heavy jacket with my hood, add a Marino wool scarf and my cuff and collar I resemble an Eskimo.

Melbourne winter

Not looking forward to seeing my chiro today. I have a rib out and when it goes back in, it hurts. Then when she massages the muscles around the same rib at the front under my left ‘girl’ it tickle/hurts. I am often grabbing my chiros thigh when it gets to be too much. Kinda “you hurt me? I hurt you!” She will say, “Mmmm, That’s good actually!” Making me thing I’m doing it wrong.
Anyway, the day goes on.

Hope your Hump Day is going to include a coffee and some delicious food.

Happy hump day
Cheers,
H

Today’s lunch is my winter favourite.
Zaffarino Arancini with side-salad.
With the medicine. Latte.

Young John – Part 2

Taxi driver

Young John Part 2

Young John came to Australia when he was only 14 years old. He was from Greece, back then he was considered too old for school, yet he couldn’t speak English so he got a job in the factories.

Greek-Migration

Eventually, he got a taxi license and drove his own taxi. As a man of his era (he is early 60’s, but thinks I believe his is late 50’s) they were encouraged to reinvest their income into their taxi licenses. So, when they retire, they wouldn’t need a pension. They are the pre-super generation.

Yes! There has been a generation of taxi drivers who don’t speak great English or know their way around Melbourne or know how to use a GPS however, that was not Young John’s fault.

I know Uber has made some waves to the Taxi Industry and I like to image Uber was 1st launched as a ride-share idea, not a way for people who don’t have great cars/need to substitute their income etc to make a living.

Uber driver

I have this conversation with many taxi drivers all the time and they tell me all the expenses/overheard, they pay for.

They pay for their security cameras, they are required to have for our safety and theirs, they pay for the system that links them to business/fares, not to mention the new car every six year, whatever K’s and insurance.

I now live closer to the rehab centre Young John first took me to and while I don’t go there anymore, anytime I need to have a taxi somewhere I text him. I tell him where I’m wanting to go and what time I need him. He will often just text me back and we often negotiate.

Every time I see Young John, he greets me by calling me “Princess” and that I’m driving him crazy and that he’ll “call my mother” I’ve given him her number and told him to go right ahead, he has yet done so.

Lately Young John has been telling me he regrets even coming to this country that has been his home for 40+ years. He has raised his family here and he has impacted so many lives in the positive, it breaks my heart.

Getting back to why Daniel Andrews deserves a good slap these days is because he had decided to make serious reforms to the taxi licenses.

I understand they are recalling all taxi licenses and paying the owners of said licenses poultry value for them, so they can re issue them out to more people.

The value of the license is supposed to be worth half a million and they look to only be getting paid $100 grand. And no chance to get a pension. And what are the older generation supposed to do?

Mental health has become a serious issue for those taxi drivers who have worked hard all their lives here in Australia. Paid their taxes and raised and educated their children. Now, to be treated like they don’t deserve to feel their contribution has meant anything?  Drive Uber?

Uber driver 1

I’m sure this topic is not done.

I’ve had some taxi drivers tell me, if they legalize Uber they will go on to the Dole (New Start!) and drive for Uber meanwhile, Young John won’t be able to get a pension in this country. I should point out, Young John’s day starts at 7am when he drives across town to collect some intellectually handicapped kids (when I say kids, I mean late 30’s) and drives them to a Centre they go to 5 days a week for activities.

I’ve often rang him when I’ve been across town at a rehabilitation facility to see if he could squeeze me in and conveniently, he was passing on his way to deliver another of his regulars to her home. In this case, a 35-year-old who was born mute.

I sat in the back as he chatted nonsense to her, entertaining her on her way home. Her interests were lollies (I know that sounds wrong) Young John singing the 1st two lines of Old MacDonald, of which he gets wrong anyway. He is amusing.

I try to call on Young John anytime I have Cab Vouchers to pay him, since he mostly squeezes me in, in-between his other “Young People” and doesn’t charge me.

Young John is like my adopted father, he asks about my love life or lack there-of and we discuss the problems in the world. Ironically, the things I don’t discuss with my own father and on the days, that I’ve received the worst news ever, Young John has been there. For a kind word and a hug.

I’m sure I’m not done singing his praises.

I hope I’ve done Young John proud, as he’s been patiently waiting for me to write about what a blessing he has been.

I know, I probably would not still be here but for people like Young John…

Love you John

Young John – Part 1

Taxi Driver

Young John Part 1

Now if I do this correctly, you will cry. Get your box of tissues and if need be, pinch yourself to cry if I can’t do it sufficient justice.

I don’t hate many people because it’s an emotion that is a waste of time, however most people wouldn’t be aware (should you need to know) that I went to High School with Victoria’s current Premier. His name is Daniel Andrews.

To be clear, we were not friends, he seemed an OK type, but I had nothing to do with him one way or another beyond a polite ‘hello’ in passing.

Daniel Andrews 1

But these days, if I saw him I would want to slap him. Probably not in the face, because don’t think Orange suits me, but definitely on the back of the head, like a naughty child.

I say this because I’m lucky enough to have a lovely taxi driver in my life.

His name is Young John. (Get the tissues ready!)

I met Young John about seven years ago, when I went to a local Physio/Rehab centre. He car-pool’s people into the centre. That first day Young John’s yellow taxi pulled up in front of my home and as I stepped outside he called out his greeting “Young Helen”, I instantly assumed I must be the youngest person he had to transport that day. I got in and we drove off. We chatted and when we pulled up for the next person, he got out and greeted the next guy “Young George”. Now George may not be his name, I can’t recall, but “George” was not a day shy of seventy and had, had a double hip replacement.

Young George was helped in and we started again, then conversation flowing easily.

Now, I suspect Young John calls everyone ‘Young’ so as not to offend them. Just like you see a Grumpy Old or vicious dog in the street and you want to pat them, you call them ‘puppy’ and they all seem to melt.

I probably should mention why I want to slap the current Premier for Victoria, said Daniel Andrews?

Daniel Andrews

Young John came here when he was too old to go to school, so he got a job in a factory until he was old enough to get a driver’s license and drive a taxi. He pays so much money to maintain his taxi license and has often driven 7 days a week for 40 years.

Currently, the Australian Government is trying to buy back all the taxi licenses for a fraction of their value. And reissue them to move taxi drivers for much, much more than the previous owners are compensated.

And this is just a tiny rant because I don’t have the time to unpack all the things wrong with Uber and the corruption that is Uber.

Uber driver

I will never catch an Uber and the many, many people from disabled, to elderly to intellectually handicapped that Young John ferries around Melbourne every day will not catch an Uber.

Young John is like my adopted father, often every week day I send him a text message suggesting a pick-up time and location to throw me out. Ok, deliver me in one piece. He responds with an offer. I continue the negotiations and often scooter on Hellonwheels to my final destination locally and walk a small block to where he is often waiting for me.

I get in to him saying “Princess! You’re driving me crazy! I’ll call your mother!” I respond with a prompt “Stop it. You love me!”

Princess

There is a great respect and appreciation tween us and I’m always happier for seeing him and having some friendly banter.

It being a Wednesday today I imagine I think he will be happy when I report he is on his way to being a star! As only he deserves!

With love! Young John.

Love you
